ABOUT: Hematite is a common iron oxide mineral. It was used as far back as 164,000 years ago, though it was officially discovered in 1773 and originally known as haematite. The name comes from the Greek word for blood – haima – owing to the colour the mineral turns once it’s ground down.

IN THE HOME: Place around or above the doorway, especially the front door. Situate on windowsills. This will help purify energies entering your home.

CLEANING & CARE: As hematite is quite soft, it’s best to store it separately from other items in case it gets scratched. It’s also rather brittle, so can shatter if dealt a hard knock.

If it needs cleaning, do so with minimal warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Do not submerge into water or have it in contact with detergents/cleaners/perfumes/make up etc.

HOW TO SPOT A FAKE: Hematite is heavy stone and cold to the touch, it warms up using heat from your body. When rubbed with sandpaper for example, it will leave a red powder. In addition, hematite is not naturally magnetic, it will not stick to metal, those that do are manmade and will not have the same healing properties.
